Another email design trend picking up speed among marketers and businesses is the use of illustration and graphics. Switching from real photographs to illustrations allows a brand to offer a softer and more customer-friendly side.

1. Sticking with large hero images
Traditional e-mail marketing has tended to have a central hero image at the top of the e-mail and it seems this isn’t about to go away. A trend that’s here to stay – in 2019, we’ve seen that symmetry is still an essential requirement for any email. Consumers tend to have an easier time reading emails with evenly distributed content between the left and right borders of the email.
4. Go beyond the borders
Speaking of borders, in 2019, consumers have been inundated with large images that look as though they’re going beyond the borders of the email and beyond what the viewer can see.
This effect is created by showing just part of an image, text or design elements, while the rest of the contents are left out of the composition and out of sight. The intention? To leave the reader wanting to see more and clicking through to your site!
5. Typography: The bigger, the better
As marketers have been searching for new ways to capture the reader’s attention, 2019 has seen a huge spike in large typography requests. With big lettering at the start of an e-mail, as a marketer, you know that it is almost impossible for the reader to ignore your message.

The actions the email wants you to take are obvious – they want you to read articles – and the headlines used are well designed to entice you to make a click.
Nike has a vast bank of email addresses garnered from people who’ve previously made purchases on one of its sites or people who have actively signed up for email updates. It has a captive audience, and so it can afford to use colour, images and snappy text to get its message across. Nike is a very cool brand and its emails reflect that.

Keep things simple

Design a single column template for your email with a width scaling of between 320-550px. This ensures that the template renders perfectly even on small displays.
A majority of people are right-handed and use their dominant hand to interact with their smartphones. This means that more attention is drawn to the left side of the screen than to the right. Put more elements and text on the left-hand side of the template and leave a reasonable blank column on the right for scrolling. This is called left flushing.

The aim of most email campaigns is to influence. You want people to click on to your website, buy from you, enquire, register, visit or give you feedback.
Igniting a measurable behaviour means you need a clear Call to Action.
There are exceptions when organisations use email marketing services to inform or educate. However, they still need a call to action within the content, to log a response to the email and to measure effectiveness.

Inspire an action
Some CTAs work by signalling people into measurable action. For example, ‘get started’, ‘learn more now’ or ‘join us’.
Dating site OKCupid simply uses ‘Continue’.
Humanising your organisation
This involves adding warmth and possibly even humour to your Call to Action. The invitation could be to ‘Start a great relationship’, ‘Talk to us’ or ‘Sign up, so we can work on this together.’
Running shoe company Brooks invites readers to ‘’Find out when we have more’.
Another way to make CTAs powerful is to imply urgency. ‘Send for details now’ or ‘enjoy this limited time offer here’ for example.
You could even turn a negative into a positive. ‘Are you in the dark/doing this wrong/missing out? Contact us to find the answer’.
The psychology of email button colours
Just like any animal, our eyes adapt to colours to assist us in our survival. From foraging in forests and spotting danger to finding precious resources like water and plants, there is a good deal of history and mystery attached to vision. In terms of marketing, this is also what makes decisions interesting, fun and creative!
Mixing things up
Nowadays many of our mental associations are mixed up with all sorts of modern references, shared culture, national ideology and nostalgic ideas. This means colour choices have the power to surprise us and introduce us to new things we may not be accustomed to. At the same time, it doesn’t mean that the basic colour ‘rules’ can be ignored, and certainly not the main one: To understand your target customers (with their particular preferences) as best you can. When it comes to email buttons such as a call-to-action button, its colour works best in tandem with 3 other things: form, placement and message. The trick is to align them all. With this in mind, follow general design principles. This includes designating a colour that complements the existing background in order for it to conform, yet stick out.
When it comes to large buttons, it can be wise to choose a colour that’s in keeping with the elements surrounding it, including the background. For smaller ones, you could choose much brighter colours.
The aim is not to deviate from the most simple psychological effect: ensuring the call-to-action button is easily noticed within the whole design but without interfering with it. After all, it’s the one button that has the power to increase conversions.
Test your choices
A final, vital rule is to remember to test out your colour and font choices on some of your recipients. This can really assist in gaining quality feedback: it’s what your campaign rests on. Their preferences matter and this, of course, extends to gender. There are studies that show men prefer brighter colours than women, who react better to softer colour choices and shades. Therefore, divide or segment your campaign further if possible. It can all add up when it comes to inviting them to push those buttons!
A guide to email-safe fonts
When you are selecting a font for your email, you need to be aware that there are various fonts deemed ‘web-safe’, and non-standard ones which may not be quite so trustworthy. Most experts will recommend that you use web-safe fonts because they are the most likely to look good on your contacts’ computers.
What’s it all about?
When a reader views your email in their browser or client, that application reads code that tells it which font to display. If the font you have used isn’t supported on their device, the browser will substitute it for a font that is available, and this can make your email design look all wrong. By choosing fonts that are already deemed to be email-safe, you have the maximum likelihood that your chosen font is available on the broadest range of devices. This means your email is less likely to appear different from how you intended.
The following fonts are considered to be email-safe:
- Comic Sans MS
- Courier New
- Lucida Sans Unicode
- Times New Roman
- Trebuchet MS
The most popular email clients in use all support these fonts. This includes Apple Mail, Gmail, Samsung Mail and Outlook, so you will have the majority of your bases covered. Most email applications will only list the email-safe fonts among their options, but if you want to use custom fonts you can do it with Google Fonts. You will need to edit the @font-face in CSS. Here’s how:
- Find the URL for loading your chosen font in Google Fonts.
- You will find it is loading your chosen font at the URL, so copy the code for it from the CSS.
- In your email HTML template, add a block in the and set the font-family.
- Add in any fallback fonts to cover your bases on devices that don’t support your chosen one.
